Special Feature w/VIDEO - FIFA 09 production w/Maurice Edu
The FIFA video game series from Electronic Arts is their most successful based on a real sport, after the Madden NFL series. The first in the series, FIFA 94, was an innovative 16-bit game and was released in anticipation of the USA's hosting of the FIFA World Cup, during the Christmas 1993 season... This is a nice time to preview FIFA 09, and EA Sports features here the 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year Maurice Edu, who also is a part of the USA Olympic squad. Motion-capture video is linked after the story... from MLSNet,
At just 22 years of age, the Toronto FC midfield talent has already raised an NCAA championship trophy, been selected first overall in the MLS SuperDraft, earned MLS Rookie of the Year honors and made his U.S. national team debut. Did we mention he'll likely captain the U.S. Olympic side in Beijing this summer? Thursday in Burnaby, British Columbia, though, in a more unconventional soccer setting, Edu was soaking up another milestone moment in his young life. He was at the vast EA Sports motion capture studio, dressed in a space-age spandex and neoprene suit, adding animations to the FIFA Soccer video game franchise he grew up playing, a video game that has now topped $3 billion in lifetime sales. "Outside of my accomplishments on the pitch, doing this for EA Sports is right beside anything else I can think of," he said of the experience. "You grow up playing this game and now to have a chance to be a part of it, add a little bit to the features, it's crazy." Performing one-on-one moves to bicycle kicks to simple thigh passes that will be used for a new pass-back animation to the goalie -- all the while covered in countless ping pong ball-like sensors -- Edu was adding to the FIFA Soccer '09 game that will be developed in 18 languages and distributed in 37 countries this October.
