Two European Super-clubs, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will end their U.S. Tours this weekend. All the big clubs who visited from other countries this saw huge crowds alll around the country; all played against MLS sides in international friendlies and/or as a part of the World Football Challenge, which itself was held entirely in large NFL/college football stadiums. Chelsea, America, Inter Milan, and AC Milan all participated in this friendly tournament, and held other U.S. exhibitions as well...
On TV, U.S. fans have been treated to more frequent matches on the basic cable networks nationally, and during this period, Fox and ESPN combined to show most of the friendlies...
Tonight, at San Francisco's Candlestick Park, a double-header including a regular-season San Jose Earthquakes game will take place, and tomorrow, D.C. United will host Real Madrid at FdeEx Field. Both of these MLS clubs will see some of their largest audiences ever for these matches; similar occurances took place in recent weeks for other clubs, most notably Sounders FC, Toronto FC, and LA Galaxy, who all broke attendance records at thier home venues. As many of you already know, Galaxy also set a 15-year U.S. attendance record for a soccer match when they hosted Barcelona for over 93,000 at the Rose Bowl...
