So Cal Style: MEXICO v ARGENTINA tonight !
So Cal Style
San Diego - a new all-time record for attendance at a local soccer match will be established tonight ...the number one team in the world is in town, and Qualcomm will be rockin' all day and into the night.
--- June 4 ---
San Diego residents don't get many chances for big soccer events - and we likely won't until we get our own MLS franchise and soccer-specific venue - but we do get a great international friendly every year as a part of the U.S. Tour of the Mexican men's national team.
Tonight's match is especially exciting because we know that the event is going to set an all-time attendance record for any soccer match ever held in the region. A new record was set last year when Mexico played the low-ranked Venezuela, so fans here knew immediately when Argentina - the number one ranked team - was announced as this year's opponent that the attendance would be through the roof for the 2008 edition.
It's too bad that Qualcomm does not have something like an 80,000 capacity, because it seems certain that it could have easily gone that high or higher this time around.
Through the roof does not begin to describe the level of excitement today. A free afternoon event called the Futbol Fiesta is included for anyone, even those without a ticket. This goes until kickoff time, concurrently with tailgating (permitted by fans with tickets) and all of the other celebrations in the streets and local watering holes around town.
This is nothing short of the biggest soccer event ever held in San Diego, and the fact that it is happening on a Wednesday night - with all tickets sold weeks in advance - should serve as fair notice to those who think - at least as far as Qualcomm is concerned- that the Chargers are most certainly not the only game in town.
Soccer fans here are always hungry for great events like this.
Tonight, they get will get to feast !
Telemundo is the national network showing this match live, beginning at 8 pm PDT. Those who live in cities served by TV Azteca and Televisa affiliates can also watch live via those local broadcast channels.
Fans, Whet your appetite now with these previews and features, Then, get your fill tonight !
