Olympic qualification failure costs Sanchez his job as coach of Mexico
Mexico was knocked out of Olympics qualifying in the first round in March, and since then, there was great speculation that this day would come - and sooner rather than later.
Local notes: Sanchez played briefly for the NASL (outdoor) San Diego Sockers (32 appearances, with 29 goals) before going to Europe, where he had the greatest success with Real Madrid (164 goals in 207 appearances with them). He brought his senior national team to San Diego last year and had a reunion with other former Sockers in attendance - for a friendly with Venezuela which saw a new all-time record attendance set for soccer in San Diego (at Qualcomm, February 28).
No one knows who will replace Sanchez - there is a very long list of possibilities. The new manager will travel with the team on their U.S. tour, which begins this month in Seattle, and makes a stop in San Diego on June 4th (that friendly - again at Qualcomm - will be against the world's number one ranked Argentina).
