Year four of the MLS SuperClasico begins tonight
Year four of the Los Angeles derby is set to begin on Saturday when the Los Angeles Galaxy takes on Chivas USA in the first installment of the SuperClasico.
The first two years of the rivalry were anything but, with the Galaxy sweeping the series between the two teams. But last season was a different story, as Chivas USA took the series in emphatic fashion, winning the decisive game 3-0. There is still a bad taste in the mouths of some of the Galaxy players.
"Losing that game 3-0, there's kind of a scar there," said Edson Buddle. "We're looking to dodge the same performance as last year and come out with an edge from this game."
There is a trophy on offer to the winner of the series, and despite their lack of success the past two seasons, the Galaxy have had chances to win trophies. They lost in the SuperLiga finals last year, and two seasons ago, the Galaxy lost in the U.S. Open Cup final. Losing the SuperClasico trophy was an even more bitter loss, because it's a trophy the Galaxy feel is rightfully theirs.
There is national TV coverage of this match, which kicks off at 7:30 pm PDT. Fox Soccer Channel's "MLS Saturday" will have a 3-hour live show built around the game, with pre-game show at 7:00 pm. FSE will also show the match live nationally in Spanish.
